Healthy & Nutritious
Healthy & Nutritious Morning Snacks, Lunch and Afternoon Snacks are provided.
I will provide Morning Snack at about 9:00 a.m. and Lunch will be served around 11:00 a.m. and Afternoon Snack will be at 3:15 p.m. A lunch memo is hanging on the door each day when requested.
Parents are required to supply infants with foods until the infant begins to eat whatever we are eating. Formula is also supplied by the parents.
**If a child requires a special diet: That will be your responsibility to provide the food each day for your child.
**If your child is snacking in the car on the way over to day care I ask that you please keep that snack in the car. Nothing upsets children more than one allowed to bring in food that is not offered to everyone. If you are bringing a special snack in for everyone than that is Fine and Wonderful. Many times parents will bring in munchkins or crackers or fruit in for day care and that is Always Welcomed.
Please, no candy or gum allowed at day care.
Children enjoy "Fun Lunches". Parents are often telling me that their children will not eat at home what they have had at daycare. Some reasons why is because I tend to make lunch time enjoyable. Instead of just hotdogs, I will make "Octopus in the sea". Instead of just a sandwich, I will make "shape sandwiches" to match our theme of the month. Instead of just chicken and cheese sandwich, I will make "Chicken & Cheese Quesadillas". Special snacks may include the "Banana Dog".
I can make almost anything into a face on their plate. You will be pleasantly surprised on how quickly they eat everything, including the olive or raisin eyes! The children also enjoy making their own pizzas, whether it be on a muffin or pre-made dough. I will have all the ingredients out and they take turns putting what they want on their pizzas. I may ask them to try to make a face on their pizza which involves good listening skills & following direction. They always love to bake special treats at the holidays too. We will bake breads and cakes for Thanksgiving for their families or just bake some cookies for their afternoon snack. A variety of different fruits will also make a "Happy Face Fruit Plate". When we have a star as our shape of the month I will serve Star Fruit and the kids love that we are eating something that we have been discussing. When I come across a new favorite for the kids I always share it with the families.
It's also easy to incorporate fruits by making Fruit Smoothies. I will make different flavors and they think it is a special treat. You can blend it so it is thick and use it as a dip with sliced fruits. Here is a quick and easy
Orange Smoothie recipe:
2 cups of milk
1- 6 oz can of orange juice ( any flavor)
1/4 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 1/2 to 2 cups of ice.
Mix in blender and serve, if too thick just add more milk. You can buy a large 12 oz can of frozen juice and cut the can in half when frozen and keep it in the freezer until next time. I just cut it and place the other half in a small ziplock container. You can add fresh fruit as well. Mix frozen or fresh fruit and yogurt.
I often buy the Yoplait Fruit Smoothies from Costcos and also buy the large bag of frozen fruit from Costcos. It's so easy to make. It's frozen mixed berries with frozen yogurt pieces, add some more frozen fruit and mix it all up. Very Good For You.
Snacks can be quick and easy. I will sometimes buy either Alphabet cereal or Letter Crackers and ask the kids to find the letters in their names. They can spend 30 minutes looking and snacking, while learning and having fun. They will ask each other for certain letters. They are very excited when they do find all the letters and write their names.
You can make a Very Quick & Very Easy Cheese Melt Sandwhich in the microwave in 1 minute. Just place a slice a cheese in between 2 pieces of bread (no butter) and place in microwave for 1 minute, let cool and you have a Cheese Melt which is healthier than a grilled cheese but taste close to the same. When I make a grilled cheese sandwich I sometimes will sprinkle parmesian cheese on the butter before grilling just to change it up a bit. It's very tasty.
A great site to visit with tons of breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, etc. ideas is Healthy Toddler Food. http://www.wholesometoddlerfood.com/index.htm
It has so much great information and recipes.
On this website, you will find toddler recipes sure to please your little ones. Healthy, nutritious, wholesome and easy ways to prepare yummy toddler recipes, meals and even toddler snack foods. This website is devoted to feeding toddlers and growing them to love fresh and wholesome foods!
It starts with a rainbow. We like to think that healthy eating is as simple as feeding your Toddler a Rainbow every day! Think of the colors of the rainbow and then think of the vegetables and fruits that match those colors! Granted, it will be very hard to feed your Toddler "blues" and "purples" every day however, the general idea of following the rainbow should be helpful.

Healthy eating is so important. I was sent an email about Obesity in America and how quicky it is effecting our country. Here is the link, please check it out and think of your children. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. Monitor what your children eat and stop obesity in its tracks. Watch this short video of the U.S. and obesity. It will surprise you.Obesity rates among preschoolers ages 2 to 5 have doubled in the past four decades, and one in five children are overweight or obese by the time they reach their 6th birthday. This health crisis begins at an early age: over half of obese children first become overweight at or before age 2

There is a great site that has lots of photos of fun lunch ideas. It's called "The Funky Lunch" . Check out the gallery. There are books you can order as well. I am actually looking into making a workshop for this program and inviting Parents and other teachers and providers.

Fun Ways to eat Snack
I buy disposable cups and bowls, clean up made easy! I then put stickers that match our theme on them or have the kids pick their own stickers. They love to decorate their own cups. I also buy snow cone cups. Easy to hold and fun to fill. Again, it's all about making it inviting and interested. If you have their attention, they will eat. They have fun spoon and fun plates too. Their drinking cups have fun straw toppers to match our theme, of course. You can also visit me on http://www.pinterest.com/guylainelabbe/ .There are lots more Fun Food Ideas and so much more.

HotDogs:
Hot Dog Octopus in the Sea
For our Under the Sea Theme I made the kids a lunch of hot dog octopus, ocean water, sea foam, sea stars and fish.
The octopus is made out of a hot dog with a mustard face. The ocean waves/water beneath him are Top Ramen noodles with blue food coloring or green to resemble Seaweed.. I added Goldfish crackers and slice of star fruit for a star fish. To wash it all down I created some "sea foam": sparkling apple cider colored with blue food coloring.
To cut the hot dog so it resembles an Octopus slice the hot dog in half lengthwise, leaving 2 inches connected at one end.Roll the hot dog 90 degrees, and repeat, slicing lengthwise in half but leaving the 2 inches connected at one end. You should now have 4 legs for the octopus.
Of course, an octopus has 8 legs, so carefully cut each of the 4 hot dog legs in half. This is where a sharp boning knife is essential, because the legs will be thin and fragile with some hot dogs. Place in boiling water and cook until done.
**You can also cut the hot dog to make crabs as well.,(last picture below)
Picture # 5
**What you'll need:
Hot Dogs,
Water,
Ketchup,
Goldfish Crackers.
Cut the end (leaving about an inch or so uncut) of a hot dog in half, turn and cut in half again making four pieces (or 4 long legs), cut each of those 'legs' in half making 8 legs. Place the cut hot dog into a pot of boiling water. The hot dog will cook and as it does it usually turns up-side-down and opens up. It is done when the legs curl up. Take it out and let it cool a bit on a paper towel. Place on a plate and add ketchup eyes and goldfish around to decorate.

Hot Dog Squid
Here is a really fun way to serve up lunch to your children. Some children think that they are jelly fish, some think they are squids. Either way, when served up with catsup or spaghetti sauce they make a wonderful meal or snack.
Cut hot dog into three equal pieces. Break uncooked spaghetti noodles in half. Insert 6-8 noodles into the bottom of the hot dog.
Boil the hot dog / spaghetti combo for 6-7 minutes until the spaghetti noodles are to your liking. Drain and plate up. Serve with spaghetti sauce or catsup and enjoy the giggling.

Spiral Hot Dog
If it looks fun, they will eat it. Spiral cut and then cooked on grill. I grilled the night before and then just threw them in the oven for 8 mins to reheat. You can also just boil them. I cut this very carefully with a knife but I am going to try using my apple peeler/cutter next time. It should work.

Cheesey Mummy Wrapped Dogs
Same as above, just add cheese before rolling. My kids got hooked on dipping their hot dogs into cheddar spray cheese.
Spaghetti Dog (from Plum Pudding.com) see pics below.
If you want to try it, just stick dry spaghetti noodles through cut hot dogs pieces and boil. I thought about adding a sauce, but I think it looks more like a finger fun food. I will try this tomorrow. Looks like fun. I think we will play with our playdough spaghetti machine first then eat this for lunch.
The Famous Hot Dog Truck
One of my Best Purchases ever! They love it! This little truck will roll and cook the hot dogs. They Absolutely love to watch them roll. They will always remind each other that the "Truck is cooking the hot dogs". And the hot dogs taste so good too. You place the buns in the top to warm while the hot dogs are cooking. It Is Wonderful!
I don't feed the kids alot of hot dogs but when I do I try to get creative.

Valentine Heart Dogs

Heart Dog With Cheese Arrow
Hear Hot Dog & Eggs (pics below) (Irina's Cute Box.blogspot)
Pic #1 below
For one heart, we'll need 1 hot dog and 1 egg. Cut the hot dog in half leaving one side uncut.
Pic #2 below
Shape the hot dog into a heart, and fix it with a tooth pick.
Pic #3 below
Place the heart onto roasting pan. Beat a little bit one egg with a pinch of salt.
Pic #4 below
Pour it inside the heart. If some of the egg leaked out, it's OK. It'll be fixed when it's ready.
Cover the pan and roast the heart on low heat until the egg is well done. Transfer it on a plate, remove the tooth pick and the spare egg. Decorate it with a couple hearts made with ketchup.

Breakfast Ideas:
Breakfast For Lunch
I will also serve Breakfast for lunch. The picture below is Toast with an egg in the middle. Very easy to make. You can cut any shape into the bread. Lightly butter a pan, heat up pan a bit, then place buttered bread, with shape cut out already, in heated pan, quickly crack open egg into hole and cook until done. Carefully flip over for a minute or two until cooked. You can also fry up the small piece you cut out to cover the peek-a-boo hole.
Also easy to just make scrambled eggs instead and pour it into the hole, that's what my kids like better.
I also serve Teddy Bear pancakes or any shape of the month pancakes. Add some blueberries on the side with a gogurt and some milk.

Nothing yummier than Snowman & Bear Pancakes for lunch. Our theme was Winter and Bears. Color him and add some fruit hair and syrup to dip in and it's all good.
Mr. Pancake Head (http://kitchenfunwithmy3sons.blogspot.com/)
Mother Goose Theme.
Everyone loves Breakfast for lunch. At least my kids do.
I made this for my Mother Goose/Nursery Rhyme Theme.
All you need to do is make a potato shape in the pan with your pancake mix. We decorated our pancake head with a strawberry for the nose, dark grapes (cut in half) for the hat...mustache...feet...and pupils. Oranges for the ears and whipped cream spray for the arms...eyes..and mouth.

Dinosaur Theme
A prehistoric adventure begins as soon as kids empty the packet of brown sugar-flavored oatmeal into their bowl, add boiling water and begin to stir! Within seconds, dinosaur eggs hatch into brightly colored baby stegosaurus and triceratops. They can not get enough of this. Breakfast for lunch-you can't go wrong, and it's so quick and easy.
Bunny Crepes Filled with Strawberries (ZiggityZoom.com )
What a fun dessert! Turn your favorite filled crepes into Bunnies for Easter. They’re easy to make and fun to eat. We actually plan to serve these for one of our Easter brunch surprises on Easter morning. This is a kid-friendly food that you can make anytime of the year as a special, fun food.
Ingredients:
2 eggs
1 egg yolk
¾ cup skim milk
½ cup flour
2 tsp butter, melted
½ cup water
1 tsp sugar
dash of vanilla
Strawberries
Chocolate sauce
Whipped cream
Non-stick spray / 1 tsp butter
What to Do:
Combine top ingredients, omitting flour. Whisk to combine. Slowly add the flour to avoid lumps. Using a flour sifter also works well.
To cook the crepes, first spray a round skillet with non-stick spray. Heat on medium. Add about an ounce of the crepe batter and swirl around to coat the bottom of the pan. After about 30 seconds, the edges will start to pull away from the pan. Flip crepe and cook for another 10 seconds.
Choose filling. We used diced strawberries. Add filling to the bottom 2/3 of the crepe and roll into tube, leaving the top third unfilled. Using a sharp knife, carefully make a slit through the center of the crepe, cutting only the top third. Now, shape the ears, folding each section down slightly to form the Bunny ears.
For Bunny face, cut off the tip of a strawberry for each nose. Dip a straw or toothpick in chocolate sauce to make eyes. Garnish with strawberries, chocolate sauce and a carrot curl, or candy for bow tie. Add whipped cream just before serving.

Flower Fruit (by simplymodernmom.com)
Apple Flower (by the muffin tin mom)
A pretty little apple flower for snack time today. My kids eat apples any which way I serve them, so this food art was really just for me.
Be sure to slice your apples super thin so they lay flat, and choose a round-ish food for the center. Carrots perhaps? Or maybe red grapes or a dollop of peanut butter.

Watermelon Popsicles (ZiggityZoom.com)
We can't think of anything that says summertime better than watermelon. Although we like watermelon served by the slice or cut into cubes, we also like making these fun watermelon pops. They can be served at room temp, chilled or frozen to make a tasty and healthy treat.
To make these juicy little treats, which we think are perfect for picnics, parties and barbeques, all you really need are some popsicle sticks. In lieu of popsicle sticks, you could even use small branches ... just sand off the ends that will be inserted into the watermelon.
Cut a round slice of watermelon, about an inch thick, then cut this into 5 or 6 sections. Make pie shaped pieces then use a knife to make a slot in the center of the "rind'. Insert popsicle handle. If you will be freezing your pops, set them on a cokkie sheet and freeze for 1 -2 hours or more, depending on how frozen you want them. If you will be keeping them in the freezer for a longer period, be sure to cover them or put into individual baggies until use.

It's all about Shapes!. I incorporate shapes each month, why not with their food too. Its more fun foods. Use small cookie cutters. Buy some fruit that is the color of the month and a shape cokie cutter. The kids will love it. We eat shape fruit, shape sandwiches, anything that I can cut into shapes.

Kiddle Pool Bob the Banana (by recipe.com)
This is Bob the Banana. You may recognize him from his previous snow tubing adventure. Now it’s summer, and he’s soakin’ up the sun in his kiddie pool (with the safety of his floaties, of course!). Take it from me: a kiddie pool can go a long way to keeping a mom sane during the summer. Overlook the grass-covered bottom of the pool, the soaked diaper (because you forgot to buy swimmers), and the streaks of sun screen on your child’s back. Pour yourself a glass of iced tea and enjoy the pure happiness this simple ankle-deep oasis brings to your little ones.
What You’ll Need:
1 slice of watermelon
blueberries
banana
grapes
1 Cheerio or other round-shaped cereal
1 pretzel stick
To Make Bob the Banana in a Kiddie Pool:
Use a glass or cup to cut two circles out of the watermelon. Use a smaller glass or cup to cut out smaller circles in each large watermelon circle. Wrap the watermelon rings in a paper towel to soak up the extra moisture. Stack rings on top of each other on a plate. Cut the banana in half and put one half inside the watermelon rings, pointed side down. Fill space around banana with blueberries. Slice a purple grape. Pat two grape slices dry with a paper towel or a napkin. (They should stick to the banana if they are dry; if not, use a dab of peanut butter to “glue” the eyes on.) Cut Cheerio in half for the smile and put in place. Cut a green grape in half for the floaties, and break pretzel stick in half for the arms. Stick one grape half on each half of the pretzel stick, and gently press each stick into the banana.

Flower Lunch ( by meetthedubiens.com)
This was a really quick and easy lunch I threw together for the kids. I really love the lunch punch sets. You can quickly turn a sandwich into a work of art. They are sturdy and come in great designs.
Here's how I made this lunch:
turkey bologna sandwich cut using the flower lunch punch - turkey bologna on top. Then I used the flower shape in the lunch punch to cut additional flowers out of cheese and turkey bologna and put large confetti sprinkles in the middle and used the 2 bread cut-outs as well. There was also a silicone flower cup filled with raspberries and a silicone flower cup filled with yogurt with a flower sprinkle.
Lunch punch makes all kinds of awesome sandwich cutters. This sandwich was made using the whimsical shapes set .Each set comes with 4 sandwich punches and they come in the most adorable designs. Here are some of the other sets they have too:

Special Halloween Snack
PB&J Halloween shaped snack. The step below show what I did. I used very little peanut butter and jelly, 1 whole loaf of bread to feed 5 kids, (Yup, My Little Pigglies). I cut off the crust and rolled the bread flat. My rolling pin was upstairs so I just used a can, perfect size actually. I cut out the shape with cookie cutters I bought last year on clearance after the holiday. And to finish it all off I lightly sprinkled orange(thats one of our colors this month) sprinkles on top.
Jack-O-Lantern
It's so easy to make the holiday lunches enjoyable. At Halloween I will cut out
jack-o-lantern faces on the sandwiches. Any type of sandwiches will do. Just add Orange Cheese.
Orange cheese in the first sandwich pic looks great. For the second sandwich read the story "The legend of Spookly the Square Pumkin" by Joe Troiano.

Witch Sanwich (ZiggityZoom.com)
Make this easy and fun sandwich for your Halloween guests. Fun for a quick lunch or dinner. The kids can even help as it's an easy recipe.
2 slices light bread
2 slices dark bread
Green apple
Carrot
Olive
slice Sandwich filling
Stack light slices of bread and cut out an angular head for the witch’s head. Stack dark bread and cut out a long, thin hat. Fill both sections with sandwich filling of your choice. A fun option here is to make grilled cheese. Set sandwich sections in place on the plate. Use long strip of green apple slice for the brim of the hat, layers two slices if needed. Cut small circular slices for polka dots from carrot and arrange on hat.
To make the hair, cut five irregular, slices of carrot and add to plate. Use an olive slice for the eye and a thin strip of apple for the mouth. Happy Halloween!

Quesadilla Flowers for first day Spring (by Meet the Dubiens)
Quesadilla - 2 tortillas with chopped chicken and shredded cheese in the middle - sometimes I throw in some chopped tomatoes, but nothing crazy or my kids won't eat them. Place in a skillet and lightly brown both sides over medium heat. When the cheese is melted, remove from skillet. I use a pizza cutter to cut them up into triangles. Arrange triangles in a flower formation.Cucumber flower stem and little cup of sour cream for dipping the quesadillas in the centre. Cup of unsweetened blueberry applesauce with sprinkles and cup of sliced cucumbers. This lunch was a hit with the kids, although they didn't eat it all because I think it was just too much food for them.
Depending on the weather for the first day of spring, We will have Spring Ice Cream Sundaes and celebrate that Spring has finally arrived. We celebrate Spring because our winters are always so long and a special treat always makes the kids happy and It Is All ABout The Kids. This year we celebrated with popsicles.

Banana Quesadillas
Banana Quesadillas
2 10 inch flour tortillas
1 teaspoon of peanut butter
½ of a banana, sliced thin
Non stick spray if needed
A pinch of both cinnamon and ginger
Heat your quesadilla maker, usually medium. You really do not want these to be to crispy.
Mix the peanut butter and cinnamon together.
Spray the quesadilla maker with non stick spray if need be. Lay one tortilla on the plate.
Spread the peanut butter and cinnamon mixture onto the tortilla. Leave about a fifth of an inch on the outside, so it will not squeeze out. Layer the banana slices around. Kind of push them down into the peanut butter.
Put the second tortilla on top and lower the lid. Cook to your liking.

Pizza Quesadillas (livinglifeintentionally/blogspot.com)
Here is what you use – flour tortillas, cheese, pizza sauce, pepperoni (or whatever toppings you like on your pizza), cooking spray, quesadilla maker or hot griddle.
Put a light amount of pizza sauce on one flour tortilla, very little
Add pepperoni (or other toppings of your choice)
Top lightly with cheese (not too much or it will goop out the side). The top with a lightly buttered (or sprayed) tortilla – this helps it brown and have the nice crispy exterior.
Slice quesadilla into wedges using a pizza cutter and serve with fruit, veggies or other favorite sides. Enjoy!

Another Recipe:
Quesadillas
1 package dry ranch dressing
1/3 cup milk
¾ cup of mayonnaise (Use Hellman’s or real Mayonnaise)
3 cups shredded jack cheese (you can use any kind of cheese)
1/3 cup of chunky salsa, mild or hot
10 (10 inch) flour tortillas
Oil (optional)
Blend the first five ingredients and set aside.
Heat your Santa Fe Quesadilla maker between medium and high
If you use oil, spread it around on the maker. I usually use non stick spray, any kind will do.

Cover it with another tortilla.
Close the lid of the Santa Fe Quesadilla maker and cook for about three to five minutes.

Turn them out onto a pretty, colorful platter.

Rainbow Bread.
I use to buy this rainbow bread and the kids loved it. I can't find it any more. So let's make our own. Paint your bread Day. I added food coloring to some milk and bought new brushes , just for food. They kids enjoyed painting. You have to remind them to only use a little water. Then toast your bread and add butter or Peanut Butter.
